It was going to be a long night. There was no doubt in Eli’s head of this fact. A special individual was heading through New York City tonight. It wasn’t a villain or a crook. He wasn’t a hero or do-gooder. He wasn’t even some famous scientist on the verge of a breakthrough. It was an empowered. One with a very unique ability. With their power, they could scry the info from one’s head and take for their own. The process could potentially break the mind of the target, but Eli didn’t much care about the consequences. He needed that for a specific job, otherwise the future road would be…tricky to say the best.
The problem with this empowered was that they were a child. Ten…maybe eleven. Further, he was a runaway after he accidentally used his power on a teacher. He had been an orphan prior so he didn’t really have a parent he could rely on for the situation, so he ran. Because of this incident, the police were after him, as were many heroes. News hadn’t traveled too far about the kid being in the city, but a few heroes would already know as would a few high-ranking officers.
A small sigh left him. He looked out the window of his gallery and to the street below. “It’s exciting, right?” He breathed, not looking towards the two that were in the room with him.
Blight kept a neutral expression on his face. “Boss.” He brought his gloved hand to the back of his neck. “You can just leave this to me, you know.”
“Hey hey hey!” Doppler put a foot down, glaring at his teammate, “You don’t trust me, do ya? Do ya?!”
Blight didn’t look away from Eli, waiting for his answer.
Eli rose a hand and waved it casually at the two of them. “I trust either of you could get the job done by yourselves. But we need to send tonight off without a hitch. We also need this kid to like us. It’ll be easier to work with him if he does. That’s the main reason we have those other goons tonight.”
Blight nodded, “I see. So, permission to act however I want?”
Eli nodded, though Doppler seemed a bit confused, looking between the two. “Huh? Huh? Huh? What’s going on?”
Eli turned to face Doppler now, a big grin on his face. “Just think of them as fodder and tools. Get the kid to like you and tell the goons to act however they want.” He tapped his head twice then pointed at Doppler. “You have about ten of them to use. They’re mainly street thugs, but together I’m sure they can do some damage.” He turned back to face the window, humming a bit as he did.
Blight looked at Doppler, the neutral expression still on his face. “Hey. I’m going to need you to pull your weight tonight. The kid probably won’t like me.”
Doppler blinked at Blight, then nodded once. Though, honestly. He had no idea what was really going on.
Blight turned and started towards the elevator. “Alright, boss, we’re going to go get started.”
Eli raised his hand and waved casually. “You two have a nice evening now! Be sure to send the right message.”
Doppler hurried after Blight, beginning talk about something unrelated to the job. He did so all the way to the back alley behind Eli’s gallery where the found the ten crooks that were hired for tonight. There were a few mutants, those mixed with animals to form freaks, a few uniquely powered individuals, some general stat enhanced people, and one normal, unpowered person. It was a unique crowd for sure, but they would get the job done. They had to.
And so, Blight began to go over the plan.
He sat on the ledge of a four-story building, looking down into the downtown alleyway below him. He heard a rumor from a homeless friend of his that they say a child lurking about in a building nearby, though it had abandoned when he checked. Sam was only guessing that the kid was still in the area. He wished he had some form of backup. He wished Melody was here. She was a good teacher and could probably point him in a good direction to go. Sadly, she was away dealing with a different problem. Something high stakes. A high-tiered villain was rampaging in a nearby town and she was dispatched to deal with him.
It’d be nice to have anyone really. He looked at his blackened, shadowy hand and let out another heavy sigh. The kid was probably lost and confused. Maybe…maybe hungry. Too scared to actually go to restaurant. Probably didn’t have money either. So where did that leave him? Where would the kid go if he wanted food? He scratched his chin, a few ideas coming to his head.
He really wished another hero would show up to help.

Elsewhere…
Samuel Greyson, or better known by his hero name, Odd, was a young hero, an apprentice or intermediate really, but still good enough to act on his own. He, along with many others, were alerted of a child who was to be brought to the station. Apparently, his power was dangerous, and the kid could barely control it. They wanted to bring him in before he hurt someone else and to make sure he got to a place where he could learn how to better use his powers. He sat on the ledge of a four-story building, looking down into the downtown alleyway below him.
