Flashing lights and a low repetitive series of hums filled the hallways of the base Devola called home. Normally this meant that Devola was going to be deployed out into the field. The lights and noise meant there were reports coming in of a situation that needed attention. Naturally, as was protocol the higher ups including Dr. Reese all quickly gathered. This meeting was different however. There was a sense of formality in the air as they discussed not when to deploy, but rather, who to deploy. Man of these individuals had been there back in the day when Bee had her tantrum and nearly destroyed the place as a baby.
After going over the footage of their most recent mission, it was apparent that Devola was a risk. Especially if the helmet was the only thing keeping her in check. As the encounters she faced grew tougher and tougher each day, it was reasonable to say she’d need better or sturdier gear. They’d also have to address the issue of her being able to take the helmet off. These things would take time, and given the situation they were currently facing there was a hard choice to be made. The incident they had been getting reports of stated that several strange looking beings were robbing a bank in midtown.
While no responding officers had been hurt yet, it was clear that the beings were highly dangerous and sported an array of powers. This was definitely a job for Devola, but they couldn’t risk another incident, like the one that occurred a week ago. The amount of destruction Devola could unleash in such a populated area would be catastrophic. Not to mention their star hero and poster child for the registration of empowered people would become a very large target of publicity.
While all this went down, Bee sat in her room all alone. Her gaze was fixated on her palm with a blank expression. In her mind she could still see the green aura. More so, she could see that shocked look on her fathers face. Devola knew what she was, but that, that was new. For the first time in a long time, the normally calm and collected girl was worried. She’d have to suck it up and face her fears. There was no way she was going to take her helmet off again.
Unfortunately for Bee she’d have to face all these problems head on. The higher ups had made their decision. As the door to her room slid open, Devola expected to be greeted by the head general of the base. Instead, standing in the doorway was her father, Dr. Reese. The tall lanky scientist would enter the room and sit down next to Devola. There were a few moments of silence before the girl would lean over into her father’s shoulder. “ I really messed up big time didn’t I?”
“Eh, just a tiny bit. I’m kidding. You’re not in trouble. If anything, it’s our fault that what happened, happened. Though I suppose that’s a story for another time.” Dr. Reese would wrap his arm around Devola and give her a small pat on the shoulder. “Look Kiddo, don’t let it get you down. There our people out there that need you. You can’t bundle yourself into a ball and just ignore them. Don’t let the past rule you. Just push on.”
Devola took her father's words to heart. While the fear still remained, he was right. While she might have been used to push someones agenda, the truth was, the world needed her. Innocent people needed her. She was a hero and that had to come first. Reinforcing her resolve, Bee sprung off the bed and followed Dr. Reese to the hanger. What Devola thought was going to be an awkward encounter with her squad mates actually turned into one of praise. While they might have been scared in the moment when the saw her all raged out, they were just glad to have her on the team. That, and she completed the last mission on her own, which made her a badass in their minds.
It would be a short helicopter ride from the facility to the midtown bank that was being robbed. Taking a few deep breaths, Devola stared at her helmet and her reflection in the bug-like visor it had. Was she really ready to do this? Her worry would seem to diminish a bit as she received a nudge on her arm from a female squad member next to her, and a few positive comments from the others. They’d quickly simmer down as the leader of the team spoke up. “Alright here’s the deal. The bank is currently under occupation by foreign empowereds. The only description we have of them is that they appear to be made of black muscle fibers and have a dome on the top of their heads where a brain seems to be housed. The operation is as follows. Devola will enter the bank to confront and subdue the robbers, the rest of us are on crowd control. No one goes in or out of that building. And keep your eyes peeled on the crowd. Given the nature of these beings, its believed they are being controlled by someone.”
The back door to the helicopter would open. Slipping on her helmet, Bee would approach the ramp. “BEE! You’ve got this kid! We’re all here for you!” the commander would shout. Devola would crack a smile beneath her helmet before giving her squad a nod and diving out of the chopper. Now all she had to do was find a way inside.
