It was such a stupid rule. Or regulation. Or whatever they wanted to call it…
But what was stupider than that was that Sirius had let his guard down. The last few cops and heroes he had run into didn’t know him, or they didn’t care enough to report him. He had gotten lucky and in that he had gotten lax in his guard. He had thought he could continue as he did, go about the world like he wasn’t breaking a law and doing hero work without a license. Of course, there were consequence for actions and now the police were after him. If he couldn’t evade them now then he’d be in a cell by the afternoon, or who knows where would follow if others learned of the origins of his powers. He couldn’t risk it.
He had come to a small town in northern California in search of a certain item from someone who said they knew about a new alien device that recently landed on earth, but upon entry in the town he was almost instantly targeted by the police. He was quickly asked for license after using his ability publicly. Of course, that led into his current situation. The cops had chased him around the town and they were persistent. He only managed to lose them after ducking into the sewer. Though, he refused to spend too much time down there. He could only deal with the smell for so long…
Upon exiting he quickly made his way to the edge of the town and into an old abandoned house. It was out in the woods, about a mile from the town. It wouldn’t be the perfect place to stay in for a prolonged time, but he could at least catch his breath and maybe take a nap. Probably not the nap, but at least get a rest of some kind. He found a good place to kick back in an old chair, the least dust and mold covered piece of furniture he found in the house. He pushed the chair over to the window so he could keep a look out. Though, he was sure to keep it slightly to the side so it would be hard to see from the outside.
In his head, Sirius growled lightly. “Oz, we need to be more careful next time.”
“I know, we’ve just had it easy lately. It won’t happen again.”
“There was supposedly a heroes in this town as well. We were lucky that they didn’t show up. Though, the police probably alerted them by now. We’ll have to get out of town.”
“What about the contact?”
“It’s fine, Oz. We need to focus on staying safe first. We can learn about it later. I am sure it’ll turn up later anyways. That’s how thing usually go.”
“We usually didn’t have to worry about the authorities either. At least for the past month or so.”
“I understand that, but we need to know when to quit. We can’t go risking our necks over this. It was just a rumor anyways, there is no real way to confirm any of that.”
“You’re right. It just sucks.”
“It does, but we’ll manage so long as we avoid anymore cops or heroes. I don’t think they could track us here after our escape through the sewer.”
“Here’s hoping.”
He lifted up his small flask of water and took a sip. He sunk into the back of the recliner and looked out the window, watching some birds fly through the air. He quietly let out a breath and closed his eyes. With how creaky the house would, he should be fine if someone tried to get in, he was a light sleeper anyways. And so, very slowly, he started to drift off to sleep, hoping that no one would show up and try to take him in.
