These vile peddlers of contraband, slaves and ill gotten gains only manage to exists because of the arcane spell they employ stolen from the Null beasts. They use foul magic to imbue themselves with an aura masking their presence from Solar Lords. No nation will formerly declare war on the Cartel because to do so would be to acknowledge them as a nation, the Solar Lords would not allow such a blaspheme as having an unwanted nation in their realm. It's said that the cartel does business even outside the Remard Grand with Null beasts and their Wandering masters. No one has ever been able to confirm this link but it would greatly explain their power and many avenues to acquire wealth. Though they have wealth and power the cartel would not dare openly challenge any of the larger nations alone, doing so might expose them too much and make them vulnerable to the Solar lords wrath. They have woven themselves into many societies fulfilling needs where the ruling body could not and attempt to stir dissention and rebellion, that is how they wage war. The cartel also engages in assassinations, mercenary work and sabotage.
The cartel was born from a human from the realm of Lucivus who broke off from the Pirates guild refusing to serve Lucivus any longer. Callas Sobston was the first head of the Freilan cartel, Freilan came from the muddled pirate lingo for "frail lads" a reference to the first Pirate fleet to settle in Lucivus realm. They left the Pirate guild out of pure greed and a desire not to share their wealth with Lucivus anymore. For this Lucivus in her rage declared not war but none the less open and lethal intent against any Freilan. As agents of the Nova lords Celestis is not under the power of the Solar lords and is free to declare a state of war on the Freilan cartel. As it stands Celestis has no military force as well as Linked being inherently none violent. This has resulted in the Linked specializing in detectives targeting gangster related activities, they have jurisdiction in all realms.

Gen mods of the Gen mod union can produce some of the most powerful mutations of their cell, there have been numerous attempts from outside forces to try and steal this knowledge. The Freilan cartel has tried many a time to sneak an agent in past security however, getting past Wave reeds is no simple task. As with many nations the Pirate guilds are a perpetual nuisance raiding trade lanes. Of course the Gen mod union is also at the political mercy of the Pirates guild and faithless pirates being indecipherable from each other. Society is relatively open and modern for the Gen mod union and technology is up to date. Relations with the Red Crown are still a little strained due to old grievances, that and their friendly nature with the Church of Gastel. The Farmers Haven often hires military forces from the Gen mod union to deal with problematic things like Vorpal creatures attacking trade ships, pirate guilds raiding lanes and dealing with some natural disasters.
