The city life was something that Sam was still not used to. There were days that were nonstop busy, crime left and right, baddies to beat, people to save, and other small tasks which had no real importance other than to those who made the requests, things like finding a lost toy and taking a photo for a group of tourists. Those days were the exhausting ones. Then, the worse option, it was too slow. Things dragged out, there was no crime, no one looking for help, and overall, just boring. There was always the stress of the police and other heroes trying to catch him.
It was tough being an unlicensed hero.
It wasn’t Sam’s fault the tests were too hard or that he didn’t have the proper education. Additionally, there were other restrictions/requirements that Sam didn’t meet, and it would be a long wait to actually get through it all. Sam didn’t have the time to go through, he couldn’t waste time on paperwork, meeting people, so on and so forth. He needed the work, he needed to get the money, and more importantly…how could anyone sit around and just let bad things happen? He couldn’t sit on his ass while he had the power to make the world a better place.
He just could live his life that way.
Back to the point, today was somewhere in the middle of a slow and busy day. There were some criminals that he encountered who stealing a woman’s wallet, another crook who was beating a young man, and then there was a young girl who had lost her mother. It wasn’t as much as the busy days, but it was tiring, especially the group of criminals. They had really put in a lot of work to getting the purse and showed a lot of resistance in giving it back. He had a few bruises after one, he could’ve gotten out unscathed, but he thought he had a better handle on the situation and got tackled from behind. It was a rooky mistake, but he was still relatively new to his hero stuff. Wasn’t like he could get a lot of practice in either, not being a legal hero.
It was around noon when Sam finally decided to give himself a break. He needed a moment to rest, maybe grab a bite to eat. He wasn’t too familiar with the part of town he was in either, he had wandered this way after getting chased by a hero who he had luckily outmaneuvered. While he was happy to have escaped, he wasn’t happy to have gotten lost.
He scratched the back of his head as he looked around, trying to get a sense of where he was. He was about to make a portal up to a roof but stopped as his stomach let out a loud grumble. Hunger had set in, it wasn’t too bad, but it was enough to urge Sam to search out a place for food. A quick glance of his general surroundings didn’t show much promise. There was an old Italian restaurant, but it looked pricy. The only other nearby building was something that…well, it was strange.
There was a sign at the edge of an alleyway which read “The Spider Web”. It didn’t sound like a food place, but there couldn’t be any harm in checking it out. It could also be one of those clubs or bars with a strange name, which, on occasion, had food! It was enough to at least go and check it out. At the very least Sam could ask for direction to a restaurant, or just directions in general. The owner could probably point him in a direction back to Central Park from which he could the rest of his way home.
He adjusted his backpack slightly, shifting a bit uneasily as he went down the alleyway. It was strange, but for some reason Sam was feeling a bit nervous as he started down that alleyway. It wasn’t anything different from any other alleyway, there just…something off about it. There was something that felt off, something that made Sam feel tense. It was like there was a presence or maybe a pressure in the air? It was so hard to place, but it was just something that Sam couldn’t shake.
He kept his Silhouette form present as he walked, for whatever reason he wanted to be ready for anything. He eyed the walls carefully, to which, at one point, he thought he saw something moving. He hadn’t, or, at least, he thought he hadn’t. He just had to relax and get to the end of this. It was only at the end that he saw the door into “The Spider Web”. He quickly picked up the pace, heading over to the door. He placed his hand on the doorknob and slowly turned. He swung upon the door and looked inside. If there was anyone in the immediate area around him, Sam would smile, wave, and make his way inside.
