In his years of working an information broker there were a few things that Eli learned about people. Well, more than a few things about people, it was his job after all, but there were a few things he learned that could be applied to groups of people. One of these very important things was to not trust people inherently. Everyone lies, anyone, if pushed far enough, can lash out, and, in this case, regular people could be as dangerous as an empowered person. There were many situations in which Eli was held at gun point or were assaulted by a normal person. Not that Empowered people weren't dangerous, there were plenty of times when Eli had his life put to risk by them, but he always managed to get out of those unfortunate circumstances. He had a good team for keeping himself safe. Even now, he had two of his best downstairs, awaiting orders.
Of course, Miguel could’ve been lying about having no powers, which is only further reason for precautions. The only trouble with it was deciding which precaution to take. He could call in Doppler and Clockwork and have them be there for physical support, although…that could create issues and add tension. He usually kept them close, but business had been slow recent, at least in terms of new partners, and he needed another option. Alternatively, he could just have the meeting over the phone, but that showed he was afraid or hesitant, that was never good to show off. He was still trying to run a business and while he couldn’t leave himself completely open he had to do something...
Or could he leave himself open?
An idea sprung in Eli’s head, an idea that made a thin smirk crawl across his face. He reached over and picked up his personal office phone and punched in a number. It rang twice before Doppler picked up the line. After a brief talk Doppler fetched Clockwork and the two of them were standing in Eli’s officer, awaiting orders. He would’ve liked to have Blight and Mimi here too, but Mimi was on a short vacation and Blight was attending to a “personal” matter. Polaroid was in the building, but he never was one for combat or protection, he was more in the support field. Clockwork and Doppler would have to suffice.
Honestly, though, these two would be more than enough. He gave the two instructions. They didn’t have long, Miguel would arrive within the hour and there some prep to do. The downstairs gallery was to be closed, which was to be expected, he normally did that when he had meetings like this. There hadn't been anyone around except for Polaroid, but he had already begun prep work for heading out for the day. After it was all cleared up Eli pulled Doppler to side to have a brief meeting in private, there was an important task Eli needed from Doppler. It was task Doppler had performed before, but it was not one that Eli had thought of doing in the office. After the meeting, the team went down into the basement and left Eli there at his desk alone. They would all watch the cameras, and, if there was any sign of danger, they would rush up and save Eli. Additionally, they had a laptop which was connected to Eli’s personal computer on his desk.
After all of that was done, all there was left was to wait. Eli spun around in his chair, humming happily, staring at the ceiling, and throwing up and down a small ball. He had ten, fifteen minutes before his client would arrive. The doors below would open and there would a small note which would direct Miguel to Eli’s office.
